Alpine is a good fit on ARM boards because it is small, boots fast, and does not waste memory on extras you do not need.</p> <p>Under the hood, Alpine uses musl instead of glibc and busybox instead of the full GNU userland. It also uses OpenRC rather than systemd. For this kind of single-node host, that is usually a plus: fewer moving parts, easier service scripts, and less baseline overhead.</p> <p>There are tradeoffs. Some tools assume glibc or systemd and can be awkward on Alpine. In practice, that matters less when most workloads run in containers, because each container ships its own userspace.</p> <h1 data-number="2" id="installing-docker-on-alpine"><span class="header-section-number">2</span> Installing Docker on Alpine</h1> <p>Docker installation is straightforward with Alpine’s package manager:</p> <pre><code>apk add docker docker-compose</code></pre> <p>Then enable and start the service with OpenRC:</p> <pre><code>rc-service docker start rc-update add docker default</code></pre> <p>The one thing worth checking up front is image architecture. Docker on ARM will pick ARM variants automatically when the registry publishes a multi-arch manifest. If an image exists only for x86-64, you can still pull it, but it will fail at runtime with <code>exec format error</code>.</p> <p>To check support before you commit to an image:</p> <pre><code>docker pull --dry-run image-name:tag</code></pre> <p>You can also inspect manifests directly in the registry UI. If you build your own images, make sure your base image and dependencies are ARM64 compatible.</p> <p>By default, Docker places containers on a bridge network and keeps them private unless you explicitly publish ports. That default isolation is useful for this architecture.</p> <h1 data-number="3" id="making-a-private-node-public-port-443-only"><span class="header-section-number">3</span> Making a Private Node Public: Port 443 Only</h1> <p>At home, your router’s NAT blocks unsolicited inbound traffic. To make anything reachable from the public internet, you need a port-forward rule.</p> <p>The rule here is intentionally narrow: forward external TCP 443 to the Pi’s internal IP on port 443.</p> <p>Do not also expose 80 or SSH on 22 unless you have a specific reason. Keeping a single public entry point cuts down your attack surface and makes traffic policy much easier to reason about.</p> <p>The request path is simple: browser -&gt; public IP:443 -&gt; router forward -&gt; Pi:443. On the Pi, Caddy terminates TLS and forwards traffic to internal containers.</p> <p>That means internal services never take direct internet traffic, and internet clients only talk over TLS.</p> <h1 data-number="4" id="domain-name-and-dynamic-dns-automation"><span class="header-section-number">4</span> Domain Name and Dynamic DNS Automation</h1> <p>To access your Pi by domain name instead of IP address, you need two pieces:</p> <ol type="1"> <li>A domain registered at a registrar (Namecheap, name.com, etc.)</li> <li>An A record in DNS pointing that domain to your public IP address</li> </ol> <p>The catch is that most residential links use dynamic public IPs. The address may stay stable for weeks, then change after a reboot or ISP maintenance. When that happens, DNS points to the old address until you update it.</p> <p>The practical fix is a tiny dynamic DNS updater running on the Pi:</p> <ol type="1"> <li>Every 5-10 minutes, query an external API to detect your current public IP (e.g., <code>https://ifconfig.me</code>)</li> <li>Compare it to a locally cached value (for example, in <code>/var/lib/ddns/current_ip</code>)</li> <li>If unchanged, exit early without calling the registrar API</li> <li>If changed, call your registrar’s DNS API to update the A record, then write the new IP to the local cache and log the change</li> </ol> <p>This local cache check avoids noisy writes to the registrar API. It also lowers rate-limit risk while still updating quickly when the IP actually changes.</p> <p>Operationally, this is a reconciliation loop: desired state is <q>DNS A record matches current public IP,</q> and the updater keeps correcting drift.</p> <p>TTL choice is a tradeoff. Short TTLs propagate changes faster but increase query volume and cache churn. Long TTLs are quieter but slower to recover after an IP change. For a home setup, 5-10 minutes is usually a good middle ground.</p> <p>If the updater dies, DNS eventually goes stale. A lightweight alert helps here: page yourself if the updater has not reported in, say, 15 minutes.</p> <h1 data-number="5" id="caddy-as-the-edge-gateway"><span class="header-section-number">5</span> Caddy as the Edge Gateway</h1> <p>Caddy is the internet-facing edge in this design. It does three jobs:</p> <ol type="1"> <li>TLS termination: Caddy accepts encrypted connections on 443, decrypts them, and forwards to internal services</li> <li>Automatic Let’s Encrypt certificates: Caddy provisions and renews TLS certificates without manual intervention</li> <li>Routing: Caddy reads a Caddyfile and routes requests by domain or path to internal services</li> </ol> <p>Example Caddyfile:</p> <pre><code>example.com { reverse_proxy localhost:5000 } api.example.com { reverse_proxy localhost:5001 } admin.example.com { reverse_proxy localhost:5002 }</code></pre> <p>Each <code>reverse_proxy</code> line maps a hostname to an internal service.</p> <p>In production, you would usually proxy to container names on a shared Docker network rather than literal <code>localhost</code> ports, but the routing idea is the same.</p> <p>Caddy’s biggest quality-of-life feature is certificate automation. It requests and renews Let’s Encrypt certs through ACME with almost no maintenance.</p> <p>You can do all of this with Nginx too, but Caddy removes a lot of operational glue scripts and certbot scheduling, which is handy on a home-hosted box.</p> <p>End to end flow is: DNS resolves domain -&gt; browser connects to <code>:443</code> -&gt; router forwards to Pi -&gt; Caddy terminates TLS -&gt; request is routed to the target service -&gt; response returns through Caddy.</p> <h1 data-number="6" id="internal-services-behind-the-proxy"><span class="header-section-number">6</span> Internal Services Behind the Proxy</h1> <p>Application containers run on private Docker networks and do not publish host ports. Only Caddy binds publicly on 443.</p> <p>For example, a Node API can listen on <code>3000</code> inside its container, and Caddy can reach it by service name on the same network.</p> <p>PostgreSQL can sit in another container on <code>5432</code>, reachable only by application containers that need it.</p> <p>This separation makes accidental exposure less likely and forces all inbound traffic through one audited path.</p> <p>Optional extras like Portainer or a private registry can help operationally, but they are not required for the core pattern.</p> <h1 data-number="7" id="minimal-security-envelope"><span class="header-section-number">7</span> Minimal Security Envelope</h1> <p>The security posture comes from a few deliberate constraints:</p> <ul> <li>Single exposed port (443) eliminates entire classes of vulnerabilities</li> <li>TLS encryption everywhere prevents passive eavesdropping</li> <li>No direct database exposure ensures applications mediate all data access</li> <li>Docker network isolation prevents one compromised container from easily accessing others</li> <li>Least privilege: containers run without unnecessary capabilities or elevated permissions</li> </ul> <p>This is not invulnerable. Real attack paths still include:</p> <ul> <li>Exploiting a vulnerability in Caddy or an application</li> <li>DNS hijacking (outside your control, but registrar account security matters)</li> <li>Brute-force attempts against exposed services</li> <li>Misconfigured application logic</li> </ul> <p>Useful hardening steps:</p> <ul> <li>Running fail2ban to block repeated connection attempts</li> <li>Configuring firewall rules on the Pi to drop traffic not on port 443</li> <li>Implementing rate limiting in Caddy or the application</li> <li>Regular security updates for Alpine, Docker, and application dependencies</li> <li>Strong authentication (API keys, OAuth, etc.) for any user-facing service</li> </ul> <p>Compared with a datacenter VPS, a home Pi gives you less upstream protection, less network redundancy, and fewer managed controls. Self-hosting is a trade: you gain ownership and learning, but you accept tighter resource limits and more operational responsibility.</p> <h1 data-number="8" id="the-emergent-platform"><span class="header-section-number">8</span> The Emergent Platform</h1> <p>Put together, these pieces behave like a compact PaaS:</p> <ul> <li>Services are deployed as Docker containers</li> <li>Services are made public via domain names routed through Caddy</li> <li>DNS automatically reconciles with IP changes</li> <li>TLS is transparent and automatic</li> <li>The entire system is ARM-native and runs on a low-power device</li> </ul> <p>It is not Kubernetes, and it does not have the polish of Heroku, but it does provide the key platform primitives: ingress, routing, TLS, and containerized deploy A single Pi has finite CPU, RAM, and uplink bandwidth, so this is not the right home for heavy production traffic.</p> <p>For personal apps, side projects, and lightweight staging environments, it is often enough.</p> <p>If you outgrow it, good next upgrades are straightforward: add monitoring (Prometheus + Grafana), automate volume backups, use a tunnel service instead of direct port-forwarding, or split services across multiple Pis behind a simple load balancer.</p>
